In November 2000, Skytrans Airlines merged with AirSwift Aviation, another regional airline based in Cairns; in January 2005, they began to operate in competition with QantasLink on the Cairns to Townsville route, using its own terminals from these cities. Skytrans Airlines was acquired from its founders by the owner of Queensland Regional Airlines (QRA), Australian Aviation Holdings, in December 2006, with Skytrans and Queensland Regional Airlines subsequently merging under Skytrans.
As of October 2016, the Skytrans Airlines fleet consists of eight de Havilland Canada Dash 8-102.

The reviewer Gregory Bell from Australia wrote that his flight was from “Brisbane to Toowoomba, and I was amazed at the service provided by this small regional airline, Skytrans Airlines. Even though the flight, in a small prop-jet, was only 30 minutes duration, we were given bottles of water and packets of potato crisps. Returning the next day, service was equally as good. Would recommend this airline.” For cabin staff and ground service and for food and beverages for his economy class flight, Bell recommended Skytrans Airlines and gave the airline 5 stars.
